I Want Their Job: adamNOTeve Photography

12 Sep

Over the next few weeks Rachael Lord will take a look at the inside world of the creative arts industries, asking people what it’s like to have their foot in the door. I WANT THEIR JOB is about highlighting the perks and challenges young people face while creating their dream job.

We’ll start with spring chicken, Aleksandar Kostadinoski, a 19 year old Melbourne-based freelance photographer. His moniker adamNOTeve is well known within the music/club scene and it’s allowed him to rub shoulders with bands such as Yeasayer, Foals and Two Door Cinema Club!

What education, training or work experience up until adamNOTeve has helped you? I never did photography at High School as I always wanted to be a graphic designer. Also, my Year 12 teacher didn’t think photography would be good to do for my folio! I finished a folio course the year after and actually had one of my works used in all posters + promotional pieces and from there I was accepted into RMIT Photo Imaging. I am currently working on what kind of photographer I want to be but apart from that, I’m mostly self-taught.

adamNOTeve was originally a T-Shirt label? Yeah, in High School, but then I transformed it into my photography alias and am currently working on creating it into a music/fashion/photo website. In the near future I’m hoping to create a team of artists and begin a blog.

What are some of the challenges involved in being a freelance photographer? For me, it’s finding time to divide my student life with my personal life.

What are some perks of the job? Knowing that you’re making noise out in the industry or even amongst your peers.

Best, worst or most wild thing you’ve photographed at a nightclub? Oh wow! So many to choose from but I’d have to say;
BEST: photographing and meeting Yannis from Foals / Alex from Two Door Cinema Club. The WHOLE Yeasayer crew + Cloud Control, and also chilling and singing on stage with THE DEATH SET!!!
WORST: random people falling over in vomit…

Advice to anyone who wants to follow your footsteps? I can say a lot, but it’s your own will and strengths that will get you to where you want to be. “BE YOURSELF AND NEVER GIVE UP”

Creative industry jobs are notorious for shitty pay. Do you have to work 6 jobs to pay the bills? What keeps you motivated when you have $18.90 in your bank account? It’s been about 9 months since I’ve had a full time job, I do miss seeing my bank with a +5k balance. At the moment I’m just living off small jobs which have payed for a lot of bills and new gear.

What’s it like to live and work in Melbourne? I’ve been to Adelaide, Sydney, Canberra + Tasmania but nothing compares to Melbourne. I’m looking forward to this summer, I get a few chances to do things in Sydney and Brisbane but apart from that I base my choices of states by the way people dress, the music that gets played on the radio and the vibe the city gives me. I’m still young and I’m still learning the who’s who in my city but I’ve met amazing photographers within the sports, fashion, music and nightlife world. I just love the venues within Melbourne, a lot of the event managers and club owners.

Share the love: who are some other passionate & creative people doing wicked things around Melbourne, Australia or the world?  My number 1 favourite Aussie influence at the moment would be a Sydney based photographer

Other Aussie talents ;

  • DONT DESIGN // James Kane (amazing freelance designs)
  • Hayley O Illustrations  // Hayley O’Connor (so much talent)
  • I OH YOU  // Johann Ponniah  (always keeping the community up to date)
  • WOLFWOLF // (new talent on the block)
  • RUFUS // (Big things from these guys coming

Who are you listening to at the moment?
Well there’s a mix of Neros – Welcome Reality and listening to some DOES IT OFFEND YOU, YEAH. I also just spent 2 hours band searching and came across Tahiti 80 🙂

 Most fun you’ve had out in the last 6 months?
The original January warehouse party by I OH YOU was the highlight of my teen life!!! But more recently would have to be Big Day Out 2011 with my brother!

As Major Raiser is about promoting social awareness, what issues would you like your voice heard on?  Teenage depression would have to be my key area for improvement. Too many kids are living stressed lives. We are taking care of kids post depression. But we seem to forget what really happens before.

adamNOTeve wants to say a special thanks to;
